My mom, Marion, is my favorite person to make art with. While her dementia has impacted her ability to live independently, it has also freed her from self-criticism and inhibitions. Her art is childlike - free, uncontrived, and unselfconscious. Due to her cognitive loss, she is nearly always in a flow state. Creating art together allows me to enter into that flow state with her, and for once it doesn’t matter that she won’t remember.
